Social Card replaces Food Basket
22/07/2024
The Food Basket will be replaced by a Social Card, which can cover 120,000 people. The aim is to give more freedom and dignity to families in need. It will be delivered to the beneficiaries of the Food Basket who are selected by the local institutions that support the most deprived.
The Social Card will be charged with the value of the support to the final recipients of the Social Cards program, defined in a Government Ordinance of July 9 of this year. EUR 50.65 will be allocated to the householder, to which will be added 70% of that amount – EUR 35.67 – for each of the remaining members of the household, including minors.
The Card will be delivered from the last quarter of the year and will allow the most deprived families to choose the food they prefer, reducing the risk of social stigmatization.
According to the Ministry of Labour Solidarity and Social Security, this measure "follows the logic of subsidiarity that is the hallmark of this government."
