The Government launched the Carers' Grant pilot project, which aims to ensure the continuity of support for the cared-for person during the temporary absence of the informal caregiver, allowing him or her to enjoy the rest to which he or she is entitled.

The measure will allow to reserve places in day care centers, Activity and Training Centers for Inclusion (CACI) and home support services, mitigating the physical and emotional burden of informal caregivers.

The pilot project will last 12 months and will be implemented in 18 municipalities, one for each district of mainland Portugal, to assess its effectiveness and sustainability, with a view to a possible generalisation.

Caregivers will be able to use these social responses for periods of up to seven consecutive hours, up to a maximum of 56 hours per month per person cared for. A Volunteer Fellowship is also created for shorter absences, up to three hours, managed by the municipalities.
